Ways to adjust your Laptop’s screen brightness Manually and Automatically

Laptop Screen Brightness

We probably need to adjust the Laptop’s screen brightness regularly based on the lighting conditions in our environment. The lighting conditions are dynamic since we use the laptop in a different place or position for our comfort. For instance, if we are using the laptop outdoors, the brightness level should be high to have better visibility. If we are using the laptop in a dark room, the brightness should be kept low so that it won’t hurt our eyes.

The longer our eyes are on the laptop’s screen, the more important to have the correct settings. The incorrect brightness can lead to headaches and vision problems if we continue to do the same in the long term. Apart from changing the Laptop’s screen brightness manually, windows can change it based on the battery remaining, the ambient light sensor on modern laptops, and also based on whether the laptop’s charger is plugged in or not.

How to Adjust your laptop’s screen brightness manually

Most of the laptops have shortcut keys to increase and decrease the brightness of the keyboard.  Most laptop makers prefer function keys to have this feature. Check for the brightness icon over the keys (usually a sun logo is used) and press keys to adjust the screen’s brightness.

When the keyboard doesn’t have this feature, you can change the brightness in the settings menu. Go to settings from the Start menu and select the system option. Select display from the menu on the left. The screen will appear as below. You can drag the slider from the available menu to increase or decrease the brightness.

To adjust the brightness in Windows 7, click the start menu. Go to the control panel, select display, and then select adjust brightness from the left menu. The brightness adjust option appears at the bottom as seen in the below picture. Drag the slider to adjust the screen brightness.

On Windows 10 and 8.1, right-click on the start menu and select mobility center. A new window will appear as in the below picture. Under the display brightness option, you can drag and adjust the screen brightness. Press Windows key + X to launch the mobility center tab on Windows

How to adjust the brightness automatically when the charger is plugged in

The brightness can be set based on whether the charger is plugged in or not. For instance, you might have set a higher brightness level when the charger is plugged in and a lower brightness level when the laptop runs on battery power. Windows is capable of automatically adjusting the screen brightness.

To adjust this setting, go to the control panel and select hardware and sound. Select power options and then click the Change plan settings option.

You might be using a balanced power plan. Once you choose change plan settings, a below window will appear.

For instance, when the laptop runs on battery power or when the charger is plugged in, you can change the time required to put the computer to sleep. In the below picture, the time put for sleep is 15 minutes when it runs on battery and 30 minutes when the charger is plugged in. Optimizing these settings will help to save power by putting your laptop to sleep when the laptop is idle for a long time.

To configure the brightness levels, use the slider in the adjust plan brightness option to increase or decrease the brightness levels. This will adjust the brightness levels on your laptop automatically based on your settings and the power source.

How to automatically adjust the screen brightness based on battery life

To change it manually, select the battery icon on the notification bar or the system tray. If you want to adjust the brightness based on the battery life or performance, you can drag the slider based on your requirements.

On Windows 10, It is possible to change the brightness automatically with the help of a battery saver feature. To change the brightness settings automatically based on the battery life remaining, Click battery settings on the notification bar. Choose turn battery saver on automatically at the option and select a percentage of the battery at which you would wish to turn on the battery saver.

Make sure you enable the Lower screen brightness while in battery saver for better battery life. When your laptop’s battery reaches 20%, the power saver turns on automatically by reducing the backlight and saves power.

How to automatically adjust the screen brightness based on atmosphere light

Many modern laptops are now equipped with ambient sensors to adjust the brightness based on the ambient light. This feature is not new to most of us because it has already been used in smartphones and tablets. Windows has the same feature as smartphones that automatically increases the brightness when you are in a brighter area and decreases the brightness when you are in a dark room.

This feature is convenient for many users. However, if you prefer to manually adjust the brightness you can follow the above steps. You may try to switch it on once and decide which option suits you better. To enable this feature, go to settings, display, and enable the “Change brightness automatically when lighting changes” option.

Some laptops don’t have an ambient or light sensor For those laptops, this feature is not available. There are two ways to check whether your laptop has an ambient sensor not.

The first one is, Click the start menu and search for device manager. Check for the “sensors” category. If the sensor category is not available, it means your laptop doesn’t have an ambient sensor.

In the display settings, if the “Change brightness automatically when lighting changes” is not available, it also means that your laptop doesn’t have a light sensor. There is another method to change the brightness. Go to the control panel, select hardware, and sound, and click power options. Select advanced power settings and expand the display option. Under the display option, choose enable adaptive brightness and enable on or off based on your requirements.
