Laptop Maintenance

Laptops today come in different shapes, sizes and specifications, but they all keep us connected to the digital world at all times. Whether you use your laptop for business, work or play, it is essential to keep them in flawless condition. A well maintained laptop is aesthetically good, improves functionality, saves time and performs reliably. Let’s have a look at the critical Laptop maintenance tips that ensure your laptop continues to deliver powerful performance.

Maintaining your Laptop in perfect condition extends the life of your laptop both internally and externally. A faster draining battery, overheating GPU, and a faulty operating system are avoidable problems that may be mitigated with routine maintenance.  Let’s have a look at the critical Laptop maintenance tips that ensure your laptop continues to deliver powerful performance.

Upgrade your Software and firmware

This is one of the most crucial steps you can take to ensure your Laptop’s longevity and security. If your Laptop is completely infected with viruses, you wouldn’t be able to use it for years. Because of the tenacity of cyber threats and hackers, software companies are releasing periodical updates to maintain their systems as secure as possible. Security patches should not be avoided, even if there are occasional faulty updates.

To update Windows 10, go to the bottom left corner of the desktop, click the Windows icon, then Settings, then Update & Security. You’ll find the most recent updates and fixes for your system in this menu.

On Mac, launch the app store and select Updates from the left-hand sidebar. This will show you any updates that your Mac is capable of installing.

Conduct regular antivirus scans

Installing antivirus will ensure your laptop is safe from malware attacks.. If you have an antivirus installed, conduct a scan to see if there are any viruses or malware. You should also make sure that your laptop doesn’t have more than one-antivirus software. This can slow down your system or possibly crash.

Consider running a virus check twice a week if you are a frequent online user who downloads software and files on a regular basis. It is always better to be cautious especially when your personal information is at stake. Malware infections can ruin your computer’s performance and expose your information to third party attackers. A virus could disrupt your network connections, crash your system, slow down your browser speed, and change computer settings.

Clear your browser cache and cookies

Clearing your cache and cookies is an important aspect of maintaining the security of your laptop and web browser. Even routine internet browsing will leave a considerable amount of cookies in your browser files. So, deleting this can make a big difference in the speed and performance of your browser. There are many browsers with different methods of deleting cookies and cache.

Since most people use chrome, you can switch to the settings on the top right corner of your browser. Then, scroll to the bottom of the page and click settings. Select advanced and broaden the menu. Scroll down until browsing data appears. You may remove your cookies, cache and clear browsing data. You can also delete it directly by clicking ctrl+h and selecting clear browsing data on the left column.

Organize your desktop

A cluttered desktop is unattractive. It takes a little know-how to clean up your desktop. You can click and drag the icons in some sort of order that almost consumes a day. YOu have better things to do than playing with a mouse for hours.

Both macOS and windows have automated organization options. Simply right-click on your desktop wallpaper with your trackpad or mouse on Windows. Next, sort by either Name, Size, File type, or Date updated from the drop-down menu. Start with Name because it will alphabetize your icons. After you select this, all of your icons will be neatly displayed in a row, making it easy to decide which programmes to keep and which to delete.

Avoid overcharging

With our increased reliance on wireless gadgets, many people consider battery power to be a primary need. There are few things more annoying than a dying battery when you still have hours of work and pleasure ahead of you. It is preferable to avoid plugging in a charger when it is at 50%. Charge only if it goes below 20%.

Unnecessary charging can lead to overcharging, which can lead to a reduction in regenerative capabilities. This typically appears to be a laptop that no longer holds a charge as well as it once did. The objective of a laptop’s wireless portability is defeated if it is tethered to the weight of a charger.

Check your microphone and camera

Microphones and Cameras have become an important feature in the laptop since most people are now connected virtually. Both are crucial when you are an entrepreneur, employee or student who needs this daily.

Use the lens cleaners we stated above to gently wipe down the camera and a soft, dry cloth to clean the microphone to keep these devices clean. When cleaning the microphone, avoid using compressed air because it can loosen or dislodge the internal components that allow it to pick up sound.

There’s nothing wrong with putting your microphone and camera out in the open, but if you want to be extra safe, just cover them up. Purchase a sticker big enough to cover the entire width of the camera lens. Three-dimensional stickers are ideal because they are simple to remove if your mind changes.
