Is Your Laptop Battery Draining too Fast: Here are the 8 Proven Ways to Fix

Many laptop users complain about the battery of their laptops draining too fast. This issue, by far, is pretty standard regardless of the brand the device belongs to. The sole reason behind the traction that laptops gain is the ability to function in a standalone mode with the help of batteries. Batteries may, however, become less efficient if not cared for properly, leading to faster draining. If you are one of the users whose laptop battery drains too fast, let’s discover some proven ways to fix it.

Let’s first attempt to understand what causes the battery of the laptop to drain so fast:

In the vast majority of cases, the prime reason behind a battery drain is the battery being old, causing it to get discharged so quickly. A few other important reasons that cause the battery to drain super fast are as follows:

  1. There might be plenty of power-consuming applications and processes active in the background.
  2. The screen brightness of the laptop is kept to the maximum.
  3. Allowing the battery to operate in high-performance mode.
  4. The backlight of the keyboard is being turned on.
  5. The laptop is connected to a lot of other external devices.
  6. Any adjustments to the system’s settings can lead to the onset of the battery draining quickly.
  7. Battery drain can also be caused due to a lot of networks and other internet connections.
  8. Corruption of the laptop’s firmware results in power outages.
  9. Defective drivers, incorrect power plan settings, and disc drives in use can also potentially cause the battery to drain quickly.
  10. In the case of a new laptop, battery drains occur due to not charging the battery soon after purchasing the device.
  11. If the laptop is Virus stricken, the battery tends to drain quickly.

The above reasons trigger the battery to drain quickly in all windows 7/8/10 and 11 laptops such as Lenovo, Dell, HP, Dell, Asus, Lenovo, Toshiba, Acer, and Samsung. Additionally, in the case of a Macbook, apart from the reasons mentioned above, the battery can get drained quickly due to updating Mac to macOS Ventura. This refers to ensuring that all the applications should be updated for Ventura- optimization. Hence, if any apps are not updated from when macOS Ventura is installed, updating them as soon as possible is advisable.

Now that we have understood the potential causes behind battery drains, let’s discover some proven ways to fix them:

1) keeping track of the Screen’s Brightness:

The laptop’s display screen is a critical component that consumes a lot of power to function efficiently. Hence, keeping the screen’s brightness as low as possible can significantly help improve the life of the laptop’s battery.

The screen’s brightness can be lowered by going to Settings -> System -> Display.

2)     Disabling Unnecessary Applications and Programs Running in the Background:

Running too many power-consuming applications and programs in the Background can disrupt the battery’s efficiency. Hence, disabling the applications and programs that are not required while retaining the required application you are currently working on will do the trick.

Unessential processes and applications can be disabled by going to Settings -> Privacy -> Background Apps. Turn off the apps and functions that are not required.

3)     Keep the Number of Network Connections to the Minimum:

The battery’s life can take a massive hit if the laptop is connected to many network connections. Hence, to resolve this issue, go to Settings ->  Network Connections -> Control Panel -> Network and Internet -> Network Connections. Right-click the inessential network and disable it.

              4)     Switch off the Keyboard’s Backlight:

Turning the keyboard’s backlight off can help resolve the issue of the battery getting drained so quickly. The keyboard’s backlight should only be turned on while using the laptop in a dark-lit room or while playing a game.

The keyboard’s backlight can be turned off by going to the Control Center ->  Mouse, and Keyboard -> choose Do not turn on, which is placed under the Keyboard Backlight section.

5)     Tweak the Power Settings:

Adjusting the power settings goes a long way in saving the battery’s life and averting issues related to battery draining. To accomplish this, go to Settings -> System -> Power & Sleep and modify sleep and screen time settings when the laptop is switched on or hibernated.

Alternatively, Clicking on the Additional Power Settings -> hitting the Create a power plan option to create a balanced or optimized power plan will help.

6)     Disconnection of all Unnecessary External Devices or Peripherals:

If the laptop is connected to multiple external devices, such as the USB drive, Bluetooth speakers, wireless mouse, CD/DVD, etc., chances are high for the battery to get drained excessively. Hence, removing all the peripherals or external devices which are not in use will help.

 7)     Ending Unnecessary Process:

Just as inessential applications running in the background pose a threat to the battery’s life, unnecessary processes running in the background can also drain the battery. Hence, disabling all unnecessary procedures is required. To do this, Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open the Task Manager, -> Hit the Processes tab ->  Select all the processes that are not necessary now, and Hit End Task in the bottom right corner.

8)     Battery Replacement as the Last Resort:

If all the above strategies fail to prolong the battery’s life, replacing the redundant battery with a newer one could be considered the last resort.

 Conclusion:

The above strategies, if implemented, will render the best possible care to your battery and prevent the laptop’s battery from draining too fast.
